Ross Cormack - Chief Executive Officer

Ross Cormack was appointed CEO of Nawras in June 2004. Seconded to Nawras from Qtel, where he was Executive Director - Wireless Services since May 2003, Ross brings over 20 years of unique international leadership experience in telecommunications including mobile start-ups and operations.

He was CEO and founder of Singapore based Virgin Mobile Asia, a $1 billion start-up joint venture between Singtel and Richard Branson's Virgin Group, which was Asia's first international first mobile virtual network operator (MVNO).

He was also Managing Director of Hong Kong CSL, the market leader in one of the world's most competitive and crowded mobile markets with six operators. In this later role, he was also a member of the Chief Executive Committee that managed Hong Kong Telecom.

At Cable & Wireless, he was responsible for a portfolio of mobile operations in Europe, which included One2One in the UK, Bouygues Telecom in France and E-Plus in Germany. Later he assumed responsibility for the Asian portfolio as Managing Director, Asiamobile, where the operations included Hong Kong CSL, M1 in Singapore, CTM Mobile in Macao, J-Phone in Japan and Optus Mobile in Australia. He spearheaded business development in China focusing primarily on CDMA with China Great Wall and drove the acquisition and integration of CSL and Hong Kong based Paclink - one of the then eight mobile operators.

As the Managing Director of AirTouch in Italy he was instrumental in winning the second licence for Omnitel Pronto Italia, which he then helped to start-up as VP - International Relations.

He was the Managing Director of GEC Reliance, which was one of the UK's leading installers and maintainers of PABX and security systems.

His earlier career took shape in Plessey with a number of appointments including Head of Investor Relations, Director of Planning for Plessey Office Networks & Systems and sales and marketing management roles in Plessey Radar, Cairo.

Ross serves on the Advisory Board of Sonim, one of the world's leading IP-based solutions providers for wireless networks. He has also served on the boards of M1 in Singapore, Pronto Italia in Italy and Bouygues Telecom in France during their start-up phases as well as on the boards of more mature operations like CSL in Hong Kong, Europolitan in Sweden and One2One in the UK.

Khalid I. Al-Mahmoud - Chief Operating Officer


Khalid I. Al-Mahmoud joined Nawras in February 2005 as the Chief Operating Officer. With more than 16 years of well-rounded experience in the telecom sector, Khalid has assumed positions of increasing responsibilities ranging from IT, ISP and Data Management to Product management and Marketing. He has diverse knowledge that spans product / service management, marketing, project management, strategy development and execution.

Before joining Nawras, Khalid was Senior Manager, Product Management and Marketing at Qtel. His responsibilities were to oversee management, development and marketing of all wireline services including International, National, Data, Internet and many other ancillary products.

Earlier, Khalid worked as IT Divisional Manager at Qtel. Responsible for IT strategy, he oversaw IT operations and introduced significant improvements in critical IT areas such as Billing and Customer Care. In his later role as the Head of the Internet and Data Services Business Unit, he was responsible for improving the Internet service and overhauling the Data Network operations.

Peter Rubeck - Chief Technology Officer


Peter Rubeck joined Nawras in June 2004 as Chief Technical Officer. With over 20 years of experience in the telecommunications industry, Peter has held several senior level positions across the globe.

His extensive technical, start-up and general telecommunications experience is invaluable for his current role at Nawras and demonstrates that he is ideally positioned to help pioneer mobile technology in the Sultanate.

Prior to joining Nawras, Peter held the demanding positions of CEO and COO at Contactel, the leading alternative operator in the Czech Republic where he spearheaded a turnaround of the organisation in order to adapt to the increasingly demanding marketplace. Responsible for the entire operation including Strategy, Marketing, Sales, Customer service, under Peter’s leadership, the company’s results for 2003 showed an impressive 48% increase in revenue.

As the Chief Technical Officer of BEN BV in the Netherlands (now known as T-Mobile), Peter was responsible for strategy, organisational development and development and planning for key departments like switching, transmission and platforms. At BEN BV, Peter implemented and managed some of the world’s most advanced mobile technologies.

Experienced in senior level management, Peter was Vice President of Tele-Denmark, managing 3200 employees. The role involved general management, planning and operation of all networks, customer service and the technical workforce. His network responsibilities included mobile, fixed network and telephony, internet, data, cable television, broadcast and IT. Peter has also gained international experience while working for International Telecommunications Union (ITU) in Geneva.

With a strong educational background, Peter holds two degrees, one in Electrical Engineering and the other in Marketing. His background is complemented with several management education seminars in prestigious institutions such as DIEU, INSEAD, etc.

At Nawras, Peter is responsible for technology across departments, from IT to the implementation and management of the mobile network itself.

Abdulla Issa Al-Rawahy - Chief Strategy Officer


Abdulla Al-Rawahy moves to Nawras from being the Executive President of Omantel. He brings with him extensive knowledge of the local telecom market and people, vital to build a successful and competitive mobile operator in Oman.

Abdulla has been working in Oman’s telecom sector for over 30 years. After joining Cable and Wireless (Oman) in 1972 as a technician, he continued his career in General Telecommunications Organisation (GTO), now known as Omantel. As Director, General Strategic Planning and Projects, he was in charge of corporate as well as technical strategies and headed several projects including the introduction of SDH transmission systems in the early 90s, roll out of the first GSM network in 1996, Internet in 1997, and an extensive countrywide fibre optic network.

In 1999, Abdulla Al-Rawahy was promoted to CEO of Omantel. He initiated the re-structuring process of the company and participated in the Government initiative towards the deregulation of the telecom sector. He was in the founding committee of the Oman Fibre Optic company and became its Chairman of the Board in 1999.

A senior member of the IEEE, Abdulla graduated in 1985 with a Master’s Degree in Science in Communications, presented papers mainly in wireless technology at several conferences and has been involved in study groups with the ITU.

Tore Solberg - Chief Commercial Officer


Tore has 18 years’ experience within telecom, spanning fixed, internet and mobile services. He spent the first seven years of his career working for Ericsson & Ascom in Norway, Sweden and Switzerland, developing and selling bespoke Operations Support Systems to telecom operators across Europe and beyond.

In 1997, Tore moved from the telecom supplier side to the telecom operator side and joined the start-up fixed & mobile operator diAx in Switzerland, with the responsibility for its wholesale, interconnect and international roaming business.

After three years as Wholesale Director at diAx, Tore was one of the founding members of a fixed broadband operator, focusing on developing broadband internet, VoIP and streaming solutions for consumers and businesses in Switzerland. After this fixed broadband venture, Tore returned to diAx (in the meantime acquired by TDC) as Head of Operator Relations and soon became Director of Mobile Marketing. In November 2004, Tore was seconded to Nawras in the capacity of Marketing Director and in 2008 assumed the position of CCO.

Mohammed Al Ghailani - Chief People Officer


With a solid background in HR Operations, Strategy, and Organization Development, Mohammed is a committed and experienced Business Leader possessing extensive HR knowledge gained over 20 years in a career spanning a variety of organizations and industries.

With strong strategic, planning and leadership skills, Mohamed is adept at managing, coaching and directing staff to deliver targets for company development. His interpersonal skills and openness to new ideas make him a credible change agent.

As a person who believes in team building through training, supervision, delegation of authority and accountability, he is driving the Nawras HR function to be a strategic business partner to all functional units ensuring a smooth transformation phase towards a new future of HR in the organization.
