Nawras participates in Connecting Leaders Conference

Nawras, the Sultanate’s customer-friendly communications provider, attended the first of its kind ‘Connecting Leaders Conference’ held recently in Doha, Qatar. Organised by Qatar Telecom (Qtel) the majority shareholders in Nawras, the conference featured prominent International speakers who shared their personal insights and winning leadership strategies with a select audience of top government officers, CEOs and business leaders from the Middle East and Asia Pacific. The event was chaired by renowned facilitator and journalist Tim Sebastian.

Nawras participated at the conference with over twenty delegates including Nawras Chairman Sheikh Saif bin Hashil Al-Maskery, Saleh Al-Riyami Nawras Board member, senior representatives from the local pension fund shareholders, key Nawras business partners, Nawras CEO Ross Cormack, senior management and a selected number of employees.

Through ’Connecting Leaders’ delegates were part of an innovative and remarkable networking opportunity. The one day intensive conference was devoted to exchanging ideas about how leaders can engage in creative leadership for innovation and sustainable growth. Nearly 400 experts and officials from Qatar, the Gulf and Arab countries, and countries further a field participated in the conference, which aimed at emphasizing the distinguished experiences of the art of leadership.

Mohammed Al-Barashdi Nawras Head of Direct Business Unit questioned Larry Hochman, one of the eminent speakers, “In order to make a business successful you need to focus on customers, however customer satisfaction is not only related to customer facing employees, but all the employees within the company. How can that be achieved?” Hochman agreed, citing an example from British Airways, where he had spent 10 years as a Director. He explained, “British Airways used a strategy to turn around the company focusing on educating employees. Known as ‘Putting People First’, it was designed to win back customers by developing loyalty and retention. The key to its success was to involve all employees, not only those directly interacting with customers on the front line but each individual within the organisation”.

Nawras prides itself on leading the telecommunications market in Oman and in order to retain that position, believes it is vital to stay abreast of trends, opinions and innovations in the local market, within the Gulf and the world at large. Nawras delegates gained unique insights from networking opportunities at the conference and brought back creative ideas and valuable experience that will in turn benefit telecommunications customers in the Sultanate.

Opening remarks at the conference were made by H.E. Sheikh Abdullah Bin Mohammed Bin Saud Al Thani, Chairman of the Board of Directors for Qatar Telecom. The panel of speakers included Ricardo Semler, who discussed forms in which organization can loosen control in favour of performance. Larry Hochman explored the most important global trends in consumer behaviour. Candace Johnson, who presented and examined examples of how new and innovative technologies, services and business models can help shape economies through the implementation and harnessing of change in the global economy. Dr. Tareq Al Suwaidan discussed how organisations identify leaders in their teams and whether leaders are born or can be created. The session finished with the world-renowned economist Lester Thurow speaking on the character of the new global economy and the kind of leaders it demands. Based on his latest book ‘Fortune Favours the Bold’, his presentation encouraged organisations to take risks in order to thrive in today’s increasingly competitive global economy.
