Nawras announces 160,000 customers at GSM World Series Conference in Dubai

Nawras the Sultanate’s customer-friendly mobile operator participated at the recently organised GSM World Series 10th annual Middle East, Gulf and North Africa conference held in Dubai, UAE between 11th-12th September. The welcome note was delivered by HE Mohammad Hassan Omran, CEO Etisalat, United Arab Emirates, and the conference was chaired by Mr. Mohammed Al-Ageel Chairman GSM Arab World and General Manager IT, Al-Jawal Saudi Telecom Company. Key speeches were delivered by Dr. Saad Al-Barrak on “Regional Expansion and the Future Around the Corner for the Telecom Industry” and Mr. Ross Cormack CEO Nawras, under the topic of strategies and marketing positioning of new entrants focusing on “New Challenges and Opportunities How can Greenfield operators establish themselves quickly and efficiently.”

Other senior regional presenters included Mr. Hakam Kanafani CEO, Jawwal Palestine who presented on “Targeting the Youth Segment: Technologies, Applications and Opportunities” and Mr. Khalid Al-Kaf, Chief Executive Officer, Mobily, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia who presented on “Introducing competition in the Kingdom- Etihad Etisalat’s Business Strategy.”

This region is one of the highest growth regions in the world. According to Informa Telecom & Media 2005 the forecast for mobile customers in the region is set to reach 68.7 million by end of 2005 and to exceed 120 million by 2009.

Mr. Cormack’s presentation focused on Nawras’s entrance into the mobile market in the Sultanate of Oman and how it has delivered on promises made prior to its launch. Speaking on the occasion he remarked “Nawras participated at the GSM World Series Conference in order to highlight our achievement as a greenfield operator in growing market share, delivering innovative services at competitive prices and getting closer to our valued customers. He told the conference that in less than 6 month operations Nawras was proud to announce that the customer base had now reached 160,000 customers. He emphasised the passion and commitment of all the Nawras team to the customer experience.

Cormack added, “The Nawras customer base is growing at an outstandingly fast rate and outperforming our own expectations. This clearly shows that the Omani population is attracted by our great offers and customer-friendly approach. Mr. Cormack also chaired the early afternoon session on the first day when presentations were heard on licence valuations, youth strategies, the GSM Association low cost mobile phones initiative and multi-SIM products for corporate customers and he also appeared on a panel of operators discussing new entrants versus market incumbents strategies. Other key messages at the conference focused on market liberalisation and competition, strategies for regional growth, driving Value added services usage, maximising revenue and new service revenues-messaging content and prepaid services. The conference heard presentations from 35 international and regional telecom business leaders, regulators and experts, and was attended by 80 exhibitors and over 1027 delegates from the telecom industry.
