Ericsson provides a fully managed GSM infrastructure for Nawras in Oman

Late last year Ericsson was chosen as a sole supplier of a full GSM network to Nawras, the second mobile operator in Oman.

On March 16th 2005; the Nawras network launched with 170 sites and more then 60% of the population covered.

In line with Nawras’ goals of a quality network backed by unique services; Ericsson provided them with a turnkey GSM/GPRS solution. In addition Nawras launched with operational MMS, Voice mail, automatic device configuration as well as web access.

The turnkey portion of the project was challenging but working tirelessly together; Ericsson and Nawras completed the entire project in under 8 months. This is a major accomplishment when you understand that along with building the GSM infrastructure; Nawras was also building a company from start-up; including all aspects associated with a wireless operator, such as first class marketing and engineering functions.

To assist Nawras in achieving their pledge to provide quality customer service, Ericsson helped to build the Network Operations Centre (NOC). This will be the hub for the managed services agreement that Ericsson and Nawras signed last year. Under this agreement, Ericsson will operate and maintain the network throughout the coming phases ensuring that Nawras customers receive the quality and coverage that they have been promised.

This new relationship further strengthens Ericsson’s position in the GSM infrastructure market not only in Oman but the Middle East. It also establishes Nawras as an innovative company that is willing to adopt new business models that enable them to quickly meet customer demand for new services and applications via their state of the art network.

Mr. Peter Rubeck, Chief Technical Officer of Nawras said, “Ericsson’s support during this time has been impeccable. Building an organisation from scratch in 8 months meant that we relied heavily on the support of our business partners. With Ericsson’s and other partners’ help, Nawras has changed the telecommunication landscape forever in Oman and our new state of the art network has allowed us to ‘Get Closer’ to the people of Oman.”

Ericsson’s Head of Market Unit Middle East Bo Nilsson commented: “We are honored to be selected as the infrastructure supplier for the Nawras mobile network and to participate in this important further development of the mobile communication in Oman. The network will also have EDGE capability from day one laying a solid foundation for Nawras to provide added value services to its customers and smoothly migrate to 3G in the future.
