Nawras helicopter helps speed up repairs of storm-damaged sites

Nawras, the Sultanate’s customer friendly communications provider, has been successfully using a helicopter to assess the condition of its network equipment in areas that are still largely inaccessible by road, transporting communication experts and the necessary tools in order to make repairs. Nawras has been painstakingly inspecting all its structures in places where coverage has been affected. This aerial survey has assisted in providing data for a comprehensive plan to be drawn up in order to bring back the pockets of mobile communication in the region that have been temporarily damaged.

Nawras has also been using the helicopter for humanitarian missions too, including the transport of vital food and water supplies to more than 600 very grateful construction workers who had been stranded since road links were cut days before.

Nawras has made great progress with repair work and has successfully reconnected communication in Sur, Al Sharquiya region and extended existing coverage in Al Khodh, Al Mawaleh and Muscat city.

With the combination of information generated by the Network Operations Centre and the aerial survey results, Nawras has put together a campaign of projects needing work, prioritised the areas most in need of attention and organised the necessary spare parts to be transported to the sites. Network engineers have been working incessantly to restore coverage as fast as possible, knowing how vital communication is at this time, particularly in the worst affected areas.

Nawras Chief Technical Officer, Peter Rubeck, explained, “Despite the havoc wreaked by cyclone Gonu, Nawras network has performed well with the majority of base stations around the country undamaged and those that have been temporarily disabled have wherever possible, undergone repair work very quickly. Nawras is continuing to progress with the outstanding restoration work and aiming to bring back all coverage levels to the same condition as before the cyclone, as quickly as is possible.

“Nawras understands how vital communication links have been for customers and how mobile connections have in many instances provided a lifeline for families and friends to check on one another. Nawras will continue to strive to provide maximum levels of service and assures customers that all our people will carry on working non-stop to restore the remaining storm-damaged mobile links at the earliest opportunity.”

Nawras state-of-the-art network has performed impressively before, during and after the cyclone, thanks to the winning combination of the latest technology being operated by highly dedicated and experienced professionals.
