Nawras Goodwill Journey visits Sadah & Mirbat

The second Nawras Goodwill Journey yesterday took off in Salalah and made its first halt at the Women's Association in the wilayat of Sadah.

Salem bin Aufeit Al Shanfari, chairman of Dhofar Municipality flagged off the Journey at the Nawras office in the presence of top officials of Nawras which included Ross Cormack, CEO; Khalid Al Mahmood, COO; and Abdullah Al Rawahi, Chief Technical Adviser of Nawras and other government dignitaries.

At the Women's Association in Sadah, the Nawras team donated a number of essential items which included airconditioners, refrigerators, computers, and furniture.

The Nawras Goodwill Journey members also distributed a number of assorted toys to a big bunch of little children amidst chants of Nawras.

Sadah is tucked away around 130kms to the north east of Salalah and is nestled among the foothills of the coast, almost hidden. But the Nawras Goodwill Journey made it there and touched the lives of the women.

Lakhyar bint Abdullah Salem Al Mahri, the head of the Sadah Women's Association, expressed her gratitude to the Nawras team and said that this is the first time that a private company had visited their Association.

"Since the Women's Association was formed in 1996, we have not received any help from any such private organisation till now. Nawras is the first company to visit us," said Lakhayar with a sense of gratitude written all over her face.

Lakhayar thanked each and every member of Nawras who visited their place.

The Nawras Goodwill Journey also had a 'pit stop' at the Al Wafa Social and Voluntary Centre for the Handicapped in Mirbat on the way to Sadah.

Toys and other learning tools for the disabled were donated to the children here, who presented a welcome song to the Nawras team.

Earlier at the flag-off function in Salalah, Khalid Al Zadjali of Nawras made a presentation to the dignitaries about the Second Nawras Goodwill Journey highlighting the plan and the places which will be visited by the convoy.

In his comments to the media, Salem bin Aufeit Al Shanfari, chairman of Dhofar Municipality, congratulated Nawras for this social initiative and he hoped that it would be successful.

He said that this charitable act by Nawras is very much appreciated and it will go a long way in helping the needy and the underprivileged in the country.

Ross Cormack, CEO of Nawras said that he is delighted that so many of his people are giving so much of their time for this Journey.

"I am also thrilled because Salem bin Aufeit Al Shanfari, chairman of Dhofar Municipality, came for the kickoff of this historic venture," Ross said.

"It is a great initiative for Oman and it shows that we in Nawras are part of the fabric of the Omani society, so we feel proud to give back to the society," added Ross.

According to Ross, when the Nawras Goodwill Journey started last year they were not sure of the response but when the team had the first couple of stops they realised how much in tune with the Omani society the initiative was. So, based on the previous year's experience, the team decided to make it bigger and better this year.

"This is a large collective exercise which includes the Nawras team, the media and the people of Oman. So I am really proud of this," Ross pointed out.

Khalid Al Mahmood, COO of Nawras underlined the fact that Nawras is not confined to providing telecom services to the country.

"The private sector has a more critical role to play in trying to support the society in all aspects and it is important for us to take such initiatives. We, in Nawras, are very proud of this venture which is a novel way of supporting the society," Khalid said.

"One of the aims of the Goodwill Journey is to reach the people in the remote areas in the country who do not get their fair share and attract attention to their needs," said Khalid while speaking about the Goodwill Journey.
